Highlights of Term 1

As I look back at Term 1, there are several memorable events and learning to reflect on.

Things done well

Knowing my form class better
At the start of the year I was a little worried about being the sole FT for class 4/1. As I didn't teach the whole class, I started a few initiatives to get to know the students better and see how I can better support their learning. I tried out a E-colours personality test and found out more about their strengths and potential limiters. The results were shared with the students too so they can better understand and communicate with one another. Another thing I started with my form class was to set aside time in the morning to have a student teacher conference session. I found the time fruitful as I gained much new insights about the students background, study styles, aspirations and concerns. This also allowed me to provide students with the necessary guidance and advice.

HI virtual tour
Another aspect that I am proud of is the HI virtual tour. While it was disappointing that we were not able to bring the students out to visit the old ford factory, we tried to bring the experience to them. With a virtual tour created by the NLB http://www.nlb.gov.sg/exhibitions/virtual/fff360/FFF360.html, I redesigned some aspects of our HI package. In class the students used iPads to navigate the various exhibits of the old ford factory and answered questions in their HI package. I can see that many of them were intrigued that they can tour a museum virtually and it was a refreshing experience for them. Check out a demo of the virtual tour below:

Things I wished I did better

Time management & priorities
During one of the MAP lessons, the topic of discussion was about study skills and time management. As I was sharing with the students about the important urgent quadrant. I realise that I also need to work on prioritising what's important and be more efficient so I can spend more time on what truly matters. There were times when I felt that there were so many things on my to-do list that I don't know where to begin, so hopefully this will be a reminder for me as term 2 gets busy.

Plans for term 2

Hum Read
It has always been my belief that Humanities is all around us and we often see evidence of this in the news articles that we read. So as we go into Term 2, I hope to be able to help kickstart and promote our Humanities blog and reading programme to our students. https://aes-hums-read.blogspot.com/

  1. Shien: I think what you did in Term 1 are good stuff! Our students are at the age when their views and outlook towards life are forming. Getting them to know themselves and helping them to being able to accept other people is important. Also the HI virtual tour is great during times like this. Perhaps the next thing we want to think about is AR or VR to let them immerse more greatly into the situation, allowing them to empathise with the people who lived during that era. I really like the Humans Read blog. Was just thinking if there is a way to collect data on how many people read the blog. You should give yourself a pat on the back!
